Michael M. Byrne Elementary School
Michael M. Byrne Elementary School is one of the best kept secrets in the Chicago Public School system. It is a multi-ethnic neighborhood school that is proud of its excellent teachers and thrives with parental involvement.
Our school originated as a branch of Sawyer Avenue School. At a later date it became a branch of the Mark Twain School, consisting of a group of portable buildings located at Archer and Normandy Avenues.
In 1936 the new school building was occupied. It was known as the 53rd and Rutherford School until it was renamed the Michael M. Byrne School in honor of one of the well-known educators in this part of the county. In 1951 the State Office of Education rated Byrne as one of the finest schools in the state and that tradition continues today.
Through the years we have kept our reputation as a great school.
We are located at 5329 S. Oak Park Avenue, Chicago, IL 60638.
We can be reached at (773)535-2170.
Principal: Mr. Robert Deckinga
Assistant Principal: Mrs. Doreen Wilson
Librarian: Mrs. Mary Beth Corbin
